If your vehicle is over 3 years old then you are required to get an annual MOT test to ensure it is safe to drive, as well as being safe for other motorists who are using the same roads as you. Here at Tweeddale Motors in Peebles, we have a purpose-build MOT testing lane where we use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that your vehicle meets the safety and environmental standards required by law. Tweeddale Motors and our MOT testers are licensed by the government appointed Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to carry out your MOT testing needs.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is examined every 12 months and without an up-to-date MOT certificate you could face a fine. Without the certificate you will be unable to renew your road tax and your car may not be insured, so if the vehicle is involved in an accident and you cannot produce an MOT certificate, you insurance claim could be affected. Having a current MOT certificate is a legal requirement in the UK and recent advances in technology have meant that police forces around the country now use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) which allows them to find out in an instant if your vehicle has a current MOT.
During the MOT test one of our expert testers (authorised by VOSA) will carry out a comprehensive series of tests in our Peebles premises by inspecting the vehicle interior, exterior, under the vehicle and under the bonnet. The VOSA Inspection Manual records the acceptable standards that a vehicle must meet and our VOSA-approved experts will look at many things to decide whether your vehicle is roadworthy, such as the vehicle structure, exhaust system, seat belts, doors, mirrors, tyres and wheels, lights and so forth. For a full breakdown of the key legal requirements included in an MOT test, please click here.
The result of each of these tests is recorded and if your vehicle passes then a certificate will be issued, if it fails then you will be issued with a document stating this. Advisory items that are not a failure but may require attention in future are listed at the right hand side of your MOT certificate. If your vehicle does fail, we have the facilities here at Tweeddale Motors in Peebles to repair it to MOT standard. If we repair the vehicle within a two week period, then there is no charge for a retest.
What if you don’t have your last MOT certificate? We can find out when your MOT is due using your Vehicle Registration Document(V5 document) number. Please remember to bring this document with you to check your MOT status
There is no way around it – you must have a valid MOT certificate.
